Arianna Huffington in trouble, again! Myra Breckenridge comments

Is it wrong to enjoy a few guilty moments of schadenfreude given this ‘news story’ by America’s New Hedda Hopper, Marlow Stern, at the Daily Beast journalistic shit -hole? The choice is limited as to models, Joyce Haber wasn’t obsessed with commies, fellow travelers, and queers, and Rona Barrett was just a starry-eyed fan with a mean streak, who longed to be glamorous !

Mr. Stern’s almost morality play features protagonist, the beloved/reviled  social/political climber Arianna Huffington! Here is just a screen capture of the illustration and headline. The reading of this should not be marred by selective quotation, the reader must just sink into this rich historical analysis of Ms. Huffington’s bad judgement, mendacity allied to and utterly annoying earnestness: three of the hallmarks of her career in both Britain and  America.

Sincerely yours,

Myra Breckenridge

@BretStephensNYT on the trouble with the UN, as apologetic cover for his Hysterical Nationalist Fellow Traveler. American Writer comments

Mr. Stephens is an almost a canny propagandist! Its not that his comments on the UN’s unseemly waste, fraud and abuse couldn’t serve the purpose of an impetus for reform. But it isn’t that, but an effort to place his fellow Neo-Conservative hysteric John Bolton, in the background, so as to highlight those UN evils: as a kind of pseudo-apologetic for his bellicose political ally Mr. Bolton. Mr. Stephens offers the mildest political analgesic to his New York Times readers.

In the meantime, we’ll all have a collective freak-out over the next national security adviser. I agree with Bolton about some things and disagree about others. But on the U.N. he’s been right all along. If his presence in the White House helps to scare the organization into real reform, so much the better.

The comparison between Bolton and the UN, and his appointment as a way of striking fear in the corrupt UN, that is argued as a kind of blackmail to induce ‘reform’ is the very comfortable authoritarian territory of Trump,Bolton and most importantly Mr. Stephens.

But Mr. Stephens makes a misstep here, in his quote from Haitian lawyer Mario Joseph, about Human Rights not just being the territorial claim of white privilege.

Except it isn’t trivial. “Imagine if the U.N. was going to the United States and raping children and bringing cholera,” Mario Joseph, a Haitian lawyer seeking compensation for the U.N.’s victims, told the A.P. “Human rights aren’t just for rich white people.” That point ought to resonate with the U.N.’s usual defenders, whose idealism rarely seems dented, and only occasionally informed, by experience.

As a committed, not speak of rabid Zionist, how would Stephens defend this startling comment by Israel’s Chief Rabbi:

22 March 2018

The human rights and Palestine solidarity organisation, BDS South Africa, condemns the racism by Israel’s Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef who during his recent weekly sermon compared African people to monkeys.

In footage aired by the Israeli media house, Ynet news, Yosef (who is one of two Israeli state-elected rabbis) can be seen referring to black people by the word “kushi,” which in modern Hebrew has derogatory connotations, and comparing Africans to “monkeys.” Click here.

This is not the first time that Israel’s Chief Rabbi Yosef has used his position to justify and legitimize discrimination. In a sermon delivered in May 2017, he suggested that secular woman behave like animals because of the way they dress. In March 2016 Yosef declared that non-Jews should not live in Israel.

The Israeli Rabbi’s views are vile but, sadly, also a reflection of Israel’s ongoing and wide-spread racism against Africans as well as the indigenous Palestinian people.

http://www.bdssouthafrica.com/post/israels-chief-rabbi-calls-black-people-monkeys/

Or consider this news report from France 24:

Headline: Israel to expel some 40,000 illegal African migrants

Sub-headline: Israel on Wednesday began implementing a plan to force tens of thousands of African migrants out of the country by April, threatening to arrest those who stay.

“This plan will get under way today,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting.

Under the programme, some 38,000 migrants who entered Israel illegally, mainly Eritreans and Sudanese, will have until the end of March to leave.

Each will receive a plane ticket and $3,500 (2,900 euros) to do so. After the deadline, this amount will decrease and those who continue to refuse to go will face arrest.

Holot, an open facility in Israel’s desert south that can host 1,200 migrants who are allowed to leave to work during the day, is also set to be closed.

It currently holds 970 people, the interior ministry said this week.

The plan was originally approved by the cabinet in November, drawing concern from the UN refugee agency.

Wednesday’s cabinet session marked the programme’s transition from the planning stage to action, migrant aid worker Adi Drori-Avraham told AFP.

“We see here the implementation of the decision,” said Drori-Avraham of the Tel Aviv-based Aid Organisation for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Israel (ASSAF).

The Africans currently hold short-term residence visas which must be renewed every two months.

“From today when a person goes to request an extension to their visa, if he does not have a pending asylum application… his visa will not be renewed and he will be given a deportation order,” she added.

She said that under the new regulations there was also an option for the authorities “not even to threaten them with a choice of voluntary departure or jail, simply to seize them and take them to a plane”.

“At the moment there are exceptions for women, children, parents of children and victims of human trafficking, but the procedural rules make it clear that those exemptions are only temporary,” she added.

http://www.france24.com/en/20180104-israel-begins-expelling-african-migrants

If your going to adopt the rhetorical pose of Caesar’s wife , as Mr. Stephens does in his essay, you must be above reproach, on the vexing question of white privilege! Or is it that that pose of moral uprightness describes the substance of the Stephens polemic as sub rosa Bolton apologetic?

Macron and Austerity: episode CCLII. Old Socialist comments

Should the reader take this as the battle-cry for Macron’s Jupertarian Revolution?

“This government seems to be intent on tackling all the French sacred cows,” said Isabelle Mateos y Lago, global macro investment strategist in the BlackRock Investment Institute. “It’s seeking to neutralise opposition by conducting reforms at a rapid pace.”

https://www.ft.com/content/bc70a228-2161-11e8-a895-1ba1f72c2c11

BlackRock Investment Institute ? Another group of profiteers, under the cover of the descriptor redolent of the pseudo-academic – see  Edward L. Bernays in his 1928 Public Relations manifesto ‘Propaganda’ –  ready to take advantage of Macron’s Revolution by The 37% ? Ms. Mateos y Lago carefully frames her argument in the blandest of terms: ‘“It’s seeking to neutralise opposition by conducting reforms at a rapid pace.”’  this redolent of the bland rhetoric of the CIA’s rationalizations for its myriad crimes.

Ms. Mateos y Lago: what of those rolling strikes? That have the support of 44% of the French electorate?

Another voice of ‘Neo-Liberal Reason’ is heard:

“It’s not just the unions — Macron wants to take on the vested interests that he views as the main obstacles to reforming the country in the past three decades; he wants to eradicate the privileges of insiders,” said Bruno Cautrès, a political analyst at Sciences Po Cevipof institute.

The ‘vested interests’ the callobos with the Evil of the Unions! ‘Reform’ is  Neo-Liberalization! Austerity in its various iterations for those lesser beings, meaning Workers,  and the permission for Capital to exploit those Workers. And drive both the Economy and those lesser beings into penury, is the proven end-point of this ‘Reform’! The stark object lessons of both America and Britain somehow eludes Ms. Mateos y Lago, or that state of self-willed ignorance is the singularity that defines her employment.

Again Ms. Mateos y Lago makes another appearance to assure the reader that Macron is:

“He wants to shake up the unions but he’s no Margaret Thatcher,” said Ms Mateos y Lago, referring to the former British prime minister who was the nemesis of unions in the UK. She pointed out that Mr Macron’s solutions involve more public sector oversight of welfare. “The state tends to take over, which is consistent with French history and culture. And he’s moving [unions’] role down to the companies. It’s a game where unions have things to win,” she said.

These assurances from Ms Mateos y Lago, think tank propagandist,of the near benign character of Macronism,  act as an introduction to this ‘news story’:

Headline: French deficit falls below EU limit for first time in decade

Sub-headline: Figures lend weight to Macron’s campaign for overhaul of eurozone economy

Bruno Le Maire, finance minister announces that the French deficit is now below the 3% level set by the EU. An EU fully controlled by four time defaulter Germany and its capo the ECB. The stark object lesson of the Greeks is prima facae evidence of this alliances utter self-serving mendacity and corrupt power. A fact that both Ms Mateos y Lago and Macron and his ally Bruno Le Maire would find utterly inconvenient to the fact and the narrative of their ‘Reform’. A Financial Times essay by Gillian Tett provides some necessary insights:

Headline: A debt to history?

Sub-headline: To some, Germany faces a moral duty to help Greece, given the aid that it has previously enjoyed

https://www.ft.com/content/927efd1e-9c32-11e4-b9f8-00144feabdc0

Some telling quotations from this ‘news story’ by Harriet Agnew:

Bruno Le Maire, finance minister, told Franceinfo radio, that the figures are “good news” and argued that they proved the president’s strategy correct. Despite the shrinking deficit, public debt increased from 96.6 per cent of GDP at the end of 2016 to 97 per cent of GDP at the end of 2017, according to Insee.

Mr Le Maire described debt reduction as a “priority objective”, adding: “When I see the situation of hospitals, I would like to spend less where it is less necessary to help our healthcare system and the French who need it most.”

Mr Macron has pledged to bring an end to France’s persistent flouting of EU budget rules, seeking to burnish Paris’s European credentials and gain credibility in Berlin and Brussels for his plans for ambitious eurozone reform. “It helps us get back our credibility in Europe,” Mr Le Maire said. “Today, when the president speaks in Europe, he is listened to and respected.”

In his first budget in October, Mr Macron promised a series of pro-business reforms including a flat tax on dividends and slashing the wealth tax to attract investment. The figures Insee released on Monday showed an improvement on the revenue side.

https://www.ft.com/content/53ef664c-30d6-11e8-b5bf-23cb17fd1498

The regular reader of this newspaper/propaganda sheet finds none of this Neo-Liberal advocacy a surprise. Even though that closely held belief in The Self Correcting Market has yet to manifest itself, to put it in the passive voice. The French electorate, that abstained by a near a near 37%, and the  Unions have shown with their ‘rolling strikes’ that the Jupertarian Politics of Macron are going to be of a piecemeal kind?  The fact that the collapse of the Neo-Liberal dogmas, in both Britain and America, has led directly to the Populism that The Financial Times inveighs against in almost every issue, and makes plain that the denial of causality is the sine qua non of propaganda.

@gaston lagaffe @StephenKMackSD

Thank you for your comment. Can you read? besides the above quote, here is more of the BlackRock Investment Institute think tank’s Ms. Mateos y Lago, trying to soften the blow, he’s no Margaret Thatcher, as the good political apologist is wont to do. Perhaps ‘He is not Hayek’ would have served as well ? As a matter of the establishment of some ersatz independence from the Macron Neo-Liberal Swindle:

“He wants to shake up the unions but he’s no Margaret Thatcher,” said Ms Mateos y Lago, referring to the former British prime minister who was the nemesis of unions in the UK. She pointed out that Mr Macron’s solutions involve more public sector oversight of welfare. “The state tends to take over, which is consistent with French history and culture. And he’s moving [unions’] role down to the companies. It’s a game where unions have things to win,” she said.

As I have stated, if you read the whole of my comment, perhaps if you haven’t, take the time to do so. I have provided the link. As for the notion of ‘fairness’ when the Macron opposition is given this:

The unexpected twist “has eroded trust”, Yvan Ricordeau, a CFDT negotiator, told the Financial Times.

The CFDT’s Mr Ricordeau admitted: “The pace [of reforms] is unabated, but we knew this would be case beforehand.”

He added: “We got prepared for it.”

“The negotiation method (for pensions) will be crucial, because we know that if it’s wrong, it’s going to create frictions,” Mr Ricordeau said.

Speak to me of fairness!

Regards,

StephenKMackSD

Andy Divine on America’s continuing political crisis. Old Socialist comments

As always Mr. Divine wreathes his latest essay in self-congratulation. He references an earlier comment that ‘sounded the alarm‘ about Trump in his self -description, using a Platonic lens. Just to make plain Plato’s own record of dubious political affiliation , even his propinquity for tyrants, see this video posted at ‘Open Yale Courses’

https://oyc.yale.edu/political-science/plsc-114/lecture-6

4. The Philosopher-King [00:26:28]

The very idea of  The Philosopher King is not politically benign!

But Andy has more political territory and issues to pronounce upon. Trump’s sadism, etc. :

Tillerson was warned of his impending doom while on the toilet — a nice, sadistic touch.

McCabe was fired hours before his retirement, a public execution also fraught with venom. What kind of man is this?

Mike Pompeo, a man whose hatred of Islam is only matched by his sympathy for waterboarders. Pompeo has been replaced in turn by a war criminal, who authorized brutal torture and illegally destroyed the evidence, Gina Haspel. *

Larry Kudlow,  Jared Kushner

And then last night, we saw McMaster fall on his sword, replaced by John Bolton, an unrepentant architect of the most disastrous war since Vietnam, a fanatical advocate for regime change in Iran, an anti-Muslim extremist, and a believer in the use of military force as if it were a religion. *

trade war with China ,  proxy and inhumane war with Iran in Yemen, When the U.S. detonates the Iran Nuclear Accord, the Crown Prince’s boasting about Kushner being “in his pocket” are far from implausible., Robert Mueller’s cumulative legal cornering of Trump, Yesterday, we discovered that Guccifer 2.0, Roger Stone’s online pen pal, is actually a Russian agent., his continued refusal to confront seriously the threat Putin clearly poses to democratic elections in the West.

But clearly Mr. Divine comes to a realization that demonstrates that he isn’t without some insightful self-criticism, even if framed as conjecture, yet he is clearly an unrelenting political hysteric. Trump is clearly a Know-Nothing, driven by ego and opportunism, and in very concrete way directionless, and unable to confront his own incompetence. Yet how can an electorate redress this problem, when both political parties are so utterly corrupt?

Part of me, of course, has long worried and hoped that my assessment of Trump as truly the tyrant of Plato’s imagination is melodramatic overkill.

Mr. Divine believes everything he reads in a Press, in thrall to National Security State’s apparatus, and its panic over the Know-Nothing politics of Trump, that has now made alliance with the most unhinged faction in American political life, the Neo-Conservatives. In sum, an American fascism, that expresses its nihilism/necrophilia in a consistent war mongering, that obliquely frames itself in The Clash of Civilizations of its Alfred Rosenberg, Samuel P. Huntington. I have placed asterisks next to some of the quotations of Mr. Devine’s comments regarding Pompeo, Haspel and Bolton. These political actors used to be fellow travelers of Mr. Divine, who was a rabid supporter of the Iraq War, whose mea culpa could not raise the dead, nor return the status quo ante. Our political fate is that ‘Clash’ and the commentaries of a class of pundits, who resolutely refuse to wear the sack cloth and ashes of their repentance. And continue to opine on our collective political fate ‘as if’ they enjoyed credibility rather than a well deserved opprobrium.

@mattklewis on the wisdom of Jordan Peterson. Queer Atheist marvels at the revival of The Cult of American Masculinity

Reading Mr. Lewis’ essay of ‘appreciation‘ of Mr. Peterson’s ’12 Rules for Life’, the reader is struck by this observation.

‘Not since William Buckley threatened Gore Vidal has intellectual pugilism been so accessible to the masses.’

One is taken aback by this, as the more apt comparison would be, for the historically aware, Gore Vidal’s continuing conversation/debate, if that is the right set of descriptors,  for his engagement with Mailer on the  ‘Prisoner of Sex’ anti-feminist manifesto !

See this review of Patriarchal Attitudes by Eva Figes in the July 22, 1971 New York Review of Books, by Gore Vidal titled ‘In Another Country’  : (behind a pay wall)

In Another Country

Or see page 583 of Gore Vidal’s Collected Essays 1952-1992. Titled ‘Women’s Liberation: Feminism and Its Discontents’

Also see Vidal and Mailer ‘debate’ the issue of ‘Feminism‘ and other pressing matters on The Dick Cavett Show:

Mr. Lewis should not exhibit his historical ignorance as demonstrative of a kind knowledge, not available to the reader. Journalism in America is predicated on the notion of the ‘Expert’, as an almost exclusively masculine descriptor. But the readership of The Daily Beast will find this reference adds a certain cashet , to Mr. Lewis’ enthusiasm for Mr. Peterson’s re-invigoration of the cult of masculine dominance, in the political present. Also elided from his Daily Beast essay is any mention of Manliness by Harvey C. Mansfield, in which he almost calls  Mrs. Thatcher manly!

If the baiting of  Mr. Mishra by Mr. Peterson in his ‘ “And you call me a fascist? You sanctimonious prick. If you were in my room at the moment, I’d slap you happily.” Shouldn’t a macho man say punch rather that slap? But waste no time in reading Mr. Mishra’s devastating unmasking of Mr. Peterson’s claim to a masculine privilege, in its many and varied historical iterations.

http://www.nybooks.com/daily/2018/03/19/jordan-peterson-and-fascist-mysticism/

That is not simply waning, but is under concerted attack from not just women, but people of color, Hispanics, as the Mestizos attacking Anglo-Protestant virtue,as argued in Huntington’s racist tract ‘Who Are We? The Challenges to America’s National Identity,  and the whole of the LGBTI community.

Not to forget in all this male dominated opining the pioneering work of Kate Millet:

Book

And the indispensable  work of Betty Friedan:

Mr. Peterson and Mr. Lewis, and other assorted retrograde apologists for The Patriarchy, seek in their unrelenting vociferousness, of their near hysteric self-apologetics/advocacy, to reify their claim, to a natural right to rule over the lesser beings of this planet.  The Other: women who need the constant tutelage of men, to overcome their  inadequate nature!

The Financial Times marks the 50th Anniversary of ’68. Old Socialist comments

Where was Anne-Sylvaine Chassnay in 1968! Probably as yet un-born! The headline gives the FT game away. So does the utter irrelevance of the Neo-Liberal Hack Mr Cohn-Bendit ! He joins Negt and Kluge in joining the ‘establishment’?
But as Ms. Chassnay points out the political scene has changed, and the Labor Unions are leading this French edition of ‘The Rebellion Against The Elites’!
The Revolutionary Spirit of ’68 lives on as the opposition to the Jupertarian Politics of Macron, as an erstaz de Gaulle, and his political nihilism as a French Renewal.
Rather Macron’s vision is filled with the mendacity of a failed Western Experiment with the Free Market Lie. Remake France in the image of a teetering Capitalism, and its bankrupt mythologists, Hayek,Mises,Friedman.
France too can immiserate, indeed, destroy its middle class. And seek solace in the dialectic of the 1% vs the 99%, that can only exacerbate that rebellion against the failed, incompetent Technocrats, and their delusion of their status as Platonic Guardians. Please note, that the notorious and tireless philosophical poser Bernard-Henri Levy was part of ’68, and that the “Nouveaux Philosophes” of ’76 grew out of that revolutionary moment. And the revelation of  Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn publication of the The Gulag Archipelago in Paris in 1973 (Russian) & Volume I in French in 1974.

French Strikes threaten the Jupertarian Politics of Macron! Almost Marx comments

Even the Neo-Conservative Washington Post gives a more nuanced view of the current, and planned, 37 day rolling walkouts in France! Although that isn’t saying much, but when compared to the sketchy report at this newspaper, it is speaks loudly!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/strikes-in-france-disrupt-rail-air-service-in-opening-shot-against-macrons-labor-plans/2018/03/22/ba0b1abe-8a69-4729-90c9-bd94d839f60c_story.html?utm_term=.820abc479ed2

And should the regular reader of this newspaper compare the 44% support for these rolling strikes, to the near 37% of spoiled, incomplete and otherwise uncountable ballots in the general election? As indicative that  Macronism, in sum, the Neo-Liberaliztion of the French State, appears to have hit a massive roadblock called Public Sector Unionism?

What of the posited Political Jupertarianism, rule by decree, that so far has been the Macron Strategy? Will Macron and his political front men, and his allies in the press give those Unions the ‘Corbyn Treatment’? i.e. cobbling together elaborate fables of perfidy of these political romantics, who want to cling to a ‘Socialist Past’ while the West is still enmeshed in the unfulfilled myth of The Self-Correcting Market?

The supposed quite of the French electorate, and the French Left is now at an end, at least in the English language press. Or was the slow evolution of the opposition to Macron not quite important a ‘news story’ for wasting space that wasn’t awash in capitalist apologetics?

Almost Marx

https://www.ft.com/content/cd023d78-2db8-11e8-9b4b-bc4b9f08f381

P.S. Should the regular reader of @FT look forward to a more fleshed out re-write of this story on March 23, 2018?

@BBH

Thank you for your comment. What has the cult of Neo-Liberalism wrought ? From its inception with the twin political hacks Thatcher and Reagan, and their successors the New Democrat  Clinton and New Labour Blair? Their ‘reforms’ brought the ‘Western Economies’ to catastrophe in 2008 ! Where is that article of that faith, The Self -Correcting Market , that has yet to manifest itself, after more than a decade of political time ? The Free Market Triumvirate of Mises/Hayek/Friedman was built on an unshakable faith in the mirage of an historical exceptionalism about the utterly vacuous, indeed bankrupt  ‘Market Theology’ !

The French electorate isn’t so politically gullible and or naive: the near 37% of uncountable ballots in the general election, and 44% support of the rolling walkouts demonstrate with arresting clarity that the Jupertarian Politics , rule by decree, of Macron is in for a formidable challenge.

No one can yet see the outcome of this rebellion of a coddled populous, who can’t let go of the the unearned benefits of the Social Democratic State, as you and your fellow travelers might argue the case. Except that it will be more shrilly articulated as the political/moral evil of Socialism!  Yet the rise of Corbyn in Britain, against a barrage of spurious charges of Antisemitism manufactured by the New Labour stalwarts. And the rise of Sanders in America, who also has faced an equally virulent smear campaign, from the utterly corrupt Clinton coterie, Bernie Bros.,demonstrates the stark failure of the ‘Free Market Mythology’.

Look also to the rise of Right Wing Populism as another manifestation of the  ‘Rebellion against the Elites’, as it was once framed in the pages of this newspaper. Catch phrases lose their propaganda effectiveness over time.  The  Technocrats of ‘The West’ committed a crime in their unstinting advocacy for a ‘Free Market’ that has yet to manifest the mirage of ‘The Self-Correcting Market’.

Does this political constellation, described by me,  in some way provide an outline for  the rise of Trump and Trumpism?  Given your comment and its impressive number of  recommendations, probably not!

Zuckerberg’s fall from grace, as reported in The Financial Times. Political Observer comments

Oh my! Recall Mr. Zuckerberg’s triumphal tour of America, in which he proclaimed the ‘Opioid Crisis‘ as one of his most pressing political concerns, the other topic I can’t recall. A Politics of Non-Politics? As those Honorary Degrees were presented with great solemnity to The Internet Wunderkind. Or should we just call him an ugly duckling looking for dates?
The anguish of the defenders of respectable bourgeois ‘values’, especially coming from propaganda headquarters of the Free Market Mythology , The Financial Times, reeks of the self-exculpatory, if not utter hypocrisy: nothing new!
‘Shares fall’ is the central concern of this news story’s headline! Profit and Loss the central Capitalist dialectic. How to define that elusive Market Exceptionalism? Its permissible, until its practice offends what remains of the accepted bourgeois norms, that in a perverse way betrays that closely held Neo-Liberal Faith, of its stalwart advocates/apologists: then ‘let the heavens fall’ ! Consider the time lapse between the  Zuckerberg triumphalism, to his fall from grace! 21 inch screen black and white TV melodrama.
As the internet is a public utility, overseen by profiteers of all stripes, like television, where was the FCC’s political/civic responsibility in holding public hearings, and writing laws , for Facebook and other internet companies that placed the public’s interest before all else? The FTC is exactly the wrong place for some pseudo-regulation, the pervasive and pernicious Neo-Liberalism rules our politics infected with Market Nihilism!  The Free Market Mythology is a prima facie  attack on the political responsibility of government, indeed the entirety of the republican tradition, to protect its citizens from the unscrupulous opportunist, in this case, under the cover of an idolatry for an ‘Internet Pioneer’

On Antisemitism and other crimes. Political Dissident comments

In the Sunday edition of The New York Times of March 19, 2018 two articles have been published:

Headline: Anti-Semitism Is Rising. Why Aren’t American Jews Speaking Up? by Jonathan  Weisman.

Headline:‘Testilying’ by Police: A Stubborn Problem

Sub-headline: Police lying persists, even amid an explosion of video evidence that has allowed the public to test officers’ credibility. By Joseph Goldstein

Mr. Weisman offers some compelling evidence of the rise of Antisemitism. But he leaves out the rise of the Alt-Right’s  Steve Bannon, and others like the self-proclaimed Aryan Milo Yiannopoulos. Yet two of the most compelling domestic contestations BDS and anti-infant circumcision, Iceland had banned this practice, remain absent from his condemnation of Antisemitism! Both remain part of the claim of Antisemitism, made by so many Jews, its become part of the phalanx of the charge of Antisemitism:

Headline: Rabbi Cardozo: outlawing circumcision would ‘end the state of Israel’

The debate concerning outlawing ritual circumcision is raging. Also here in Denmark, it is now very much at the fore, in mainstream news. Other Nordic countries such as Iceland and Norway have had strong popular motions to set an age limit to circumcision, and this is following the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe’s suggestion from 2013 to ban ritual circumcision (Children’s right to physical integrity). I have even attended a church sermon recently (yes, that’s right – I went there mostly to hear Bach’s music!), where the priest used his whole sermon to address the debate – pointing out that Jesus was also a circumcised Jew!

The latter is a kind of an amusing statement – but there’s an irony there, which was clearly lost on the priest – that Jesus couldn’t have taken a decision about his own circumcision at the age of 8 days. And this is really the point of the whole debate. It’s not about circumcision as such, as a medical procedure – but about ritual, forced circumcision.

Recently a very prominent rabbi, Nathan Lopes Cardozo, has made a novel assertion in the debate (writing in Times of Israel):

As Spinoza, who had left all Jewishness, so correctly observed, circumcision is the secret to the miracle of Jewish survival. What those Jews who oppose circumcision should never forget is that the attempt to outlaw this rite may not just make Jewish life impossible, but would probably end all Jewish existence. In fact, it is a call to end the State of Israel as the national homeland of the Jewish people.

Cardozo’s piece is so egregious, it deserves its own particular focus and analysis, which I will provide here. But before I go further into the intricacies of Cardozo’s piece, I would just like to accentuate that Cardozo is an Orthodox rabbi of considerable international clout. UK Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has said that “Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo has emerged as one of the most thoughtful voices in contemporary Judaism. He is a man of deep faith and wide intellectual horizons, unafraid to confront the challenges of the age with the quiet confidence of one who is attuned to the music of eternity.”

And Cardozo does manage to address a wide audience with the modern language of “human rights”. In fact, his article’s title contains a witty irony to attract the “human rights” interested: “Circumcision: Why risk your child’s well-being? A call to all Israelis”, it says (and he really means just Jews).

http://mondoweiss.net/2018/03/cardozo-outlawing-circumcision/

Perhaps Mr. Weisman being an editor at the New York Times mutes his essay to appear ‘evenhanded’, although Barrie Weiss and Bret Stephens provide the most hysterical iterations of the bogus charge of Antisemitism at the Times.

BDS is prima facie Antisemitism, as Zionism/Israel is also prima facie incapable of wrong doing. Their European suffering is the badge of their moral exceptionalism!

The reader should contrast Mr. Weisman’s essay with the stark reality of officers of the Court lying under oath written by Joseph Goldstein. These officers of the Court ,the police, lie with impunity! There is no ‘lesser of two evils’ here but the reality that black Americans are treated as less than. A confirmation, in contemporary jurisprudential  terms ,of the  Declaration of Independence’s assertion that slaves are 3/5 of a person?

An investigation by The New York Times has found that on more than 25 occasions since January 2015, judges or prosecutors determined that a key aspect of a New York City police officer’s testimony was probably untrue. The Times identified these cases — many of which are sealed — through interviews with lawyers, police officers and current and former judges.

In these cases, officers have lied about the whereabouts of guns, putting them in suspects’ hands or waistbands when they were actually hidden out of sight. They have barged into apartments and conducted searches, only to testify otherwise later. Under oath, they have given firsthand accounts of crimes or arrests that they did not in fact witness. They have falsely claimed to have watched drug deals happen, only to later recant or be shown to have lied.

No detail, seemingly, is too minor to embellish. “Clenched fists” is how one Brooklyn officer described the hands of a man he claimed had angrily approached him and started screaming and yelling — an encounter that prosecutors later determined never occurred. Another officer, during a Bronx trial, accused a driver of recklessly crossing the double-yellow line — on a stretch of road that had no double-yellow line.

In many instances, the motive for lying was readily apparent: to skirt constitutional restrictions against unreasonable searches and stops. In other cases, the falsehoods appear aimed at convicting people — who may or may not have committed a crime — with trumped-up evidence.

Does the reader need also to be reminded of the Show Trial  of Cecily McMillan, in which the prosecution fixed the case, by denial of the argumentative line of the defense?

On March 17, 2012, McMillan was at Zuccotti Park during a protest marking the six-month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. When the police began a mass arrest of the peaceful protestors, she was violently grabbed on her breast from behind — an action that, as any woman will tell you, will cause an instinctive response. McMillan’s response is what the NYPD calls an assault on their officer; the physical evidence of what prompted her action is downplayed.

But the bruising on her breast wasn’t all. After her arrest, McMillan was beaten severely by the police on her ribs and arms until she went into a seizure. She was subsequently denied medical treatment by the police, in full view of other protestors who pleaded with police to attend to her. The NYPD claim she initiated the altercation and charged her with a felony — an unfortunately common reversal on the part of the police after abusing arrestees.

Assistant district attorney Erin Choi stated in court that during McMillan’s arrest she cried out to protestors “Are you filming this?” and implied she did so out of fear of being caught on video attacking an officer. But Occupy Wall Street activists — and anyone who has ever demonstrated and seen police mistreat protestors — knows that the reason we chant “the whole world is watching” is that we want to remind the police that their actions will be documented. Unfortunately, it is a usually fruitless attempt to dissuade excessive force, as in McMillan’s case.

McMillan is just one of more than 700 protesters arrested in the course of New York Occupy Wall Street’s mass mobilization. These mass arrests during a peaceful protest resulted from a policing policy of arresting first and finding charges later — a pattern of unjust policing noted in a scrupulously detailed report issued by the NYU School of Law and Fordham Law School faculties. According to this report, the NYPD routinely used excessive force against Occupy protestors, with the police employing batons, pepper spray, scooters, and horses against the peaceful demonstrators. This behavior has led to the vast majority of these 700 charges being dismissed by the courts.

McMillan’s case, however, has not been dismissed. The DA’s office offered her a plea bargain: avoid jail time in exchange for pleading guilty to felony assault. A dedicated pacifist, she refused.

McMillan’s arresting officer Grantley Bovel has previously been involved in incidents involving the possible excessive use of force, as well as other possibly illegal behavior, but the judge ruled this history is inadmissable. Bovel is also currently being sued by a protestor arrested the same day as McMillan for purposefully bashing his head into the seats of a police bus while dragging him down the aisle.

Bloomberg’s minions manipulated that verdict! Or should the reader look to the removal of Judge Scheindlin removal from the ‘Stop and Frisk’ case? Her 2016 New York Times interview:

Headline: Departing Judge Offers Blunt Defense of Ruling in Stop-and-Frisk Case

For weeks and months, Judge Shira A. Scheindlin had been excoriated by New York City’s highest public officials for her ruling in 2013 that the Police Department’s stop-and-frisk policy had violated the rights of minorities. At the time, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said, in essence, that he hoped the ruling would not take effect while he was still in office, because he did not want to be “responsible for a lot of people dying.”

The attacks on Judge Scheindlin only intensified after a federal appeals panel stayed her ruling, criticized her actions in the case and removed her from continuing to oversee it.

But last week, as Judge Scheindlin prepared to step down after nearly 22 years as a federal district judge in Manhattan, she offered her first extensive interviews about the case and her tenure, with a particularly blunt response to the criticism.

She would never forget, she said, seeing a front-page photograph in a newspaper the day after she released her ruling, showing Mr. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, as she put it, “looking like two angry white men.”

“They seemed out of touch with the issues that the communities cared about,” Judge Scheindlin said. “They didn’t seem to understand the impact of these policies on real people and real neighborhoods and real communities and the detrimental impact it was having, even on policing. And that’s the point. They didn’t seem to get it. It was all about fear — New York would blow up.”

What can the reader think about both Antisemitism, actual and conjured by apologists,  and institutional injustice black defendants, charged with crimes on the basis of lies and falsified evidence? What level of injustice and hate do we tolerate in the Age of Trump ? That has its root in a failed political class, that is defined by its fealty to careerism/opportunism, based in a Free Market Mythology, rooted solely in the profit motive.  This political class has demonstrated that it has willfully discarded the republican tradition for the shit-hole of The Market, as singularity. That has supplanted  a moral/ethical/political tradition that evolved over two millennia. If there is only The Market as the ultimate vacuity, where can morality,  respect for diversity, even democracy be?

On the martyrdom of McCabe. Political Observer comments

What is ‘the lesser of two evils’ ? Trump and Trumpism, in the wake of the collapse of the Neo-Liberalism backed by the New Democrats and the Republicans? The denial of responsibility of these two utterly corrupt Parties led directly to Trump!
Or an utterly corrupt FBI,  the American Stasi, that has framed and suborned to perjury, just one of the many glaring instances, the Rosenberg case, or the Crime Lab scandal:

The article notes that the admissions from the FBI and Department of Justice “confirm long-suspected problems with subjective, pattern-based forensic techniques—like hair and bite-mark comparisons—that have contributed to wrongful convictions in more than one-quarter of 329 DNA-exoneration cases since 1989.”

Read the whole essay by Conor Friedersdorf for the breathtaking scope of this betrayal, not just miscarriage of justice  -while careerist hack Mueller stood by and did nothing. This case finally decided in 2015. How many people were executed on the mythic status of FBI Science ? Justice delayed is Justice denied!

The record of FBI crimes is voluminous, but the zeal to defend McCabe, as victim of the political sociopath Trump is what? Why would anyone with even the vaguest awareness of the history of the FBI,  be blinded by the presentation of the FBI, and its officers/minions as enjoying the status of victim/hero! It is more apologetics for an utterly corrupt and murdering American National Security State. And a Jurisprudence, that slavishly does the bidding of this phalanx of lies and rationalizations, in the FISA kangaroo court. Too strong? Not strong enough!
