Economics and Morality

Adam Smith looked upon capitalism as emancipatory to the poor ; victims of ancestral feudalism, an ossified system. His Wealth of Nations cannot be separated from his Theory of Moral Sentiments except by apologists for the current crop of plutocrats and kleptocrats. His Science of Man was his incomplete project, we know of its two parts and of Mr. Smith’s intention. We also know of the mendacity of the present day ‘Free Marketeer’s’ and their utterly failed project: we see, hear and live in the ruins of that collapse, every day.

About stephenkmacksd

Rootless cosmopolitan, down at heels intellectual;would be writer. 'Polemic is a discourse of conflict, whose effect depends on a delicate balance between the requirements of truth and the enticements of anger, the duty to argue and the zest to inflame. Its rhetoric allows, even enforces, a certain figurative licence. Like epitaphs in Johnson’s adage, it is not under oath.' https://www.lrb.co.uk/v15/n20/perry-anderson/diary
