Dagan, Ofer and Israel’s Growing Iran Credibility Gap

Posted on 06/09/2011 by Juan

Far rightwing Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin (“Bibi”) Netanyahu of the Likud Party has attempted to sidestep making peace with the Palestinians by using the magician’s favorite tactic of misdirection– of trying to get the audience to look somewhere else while the trick is being performed. Netanyahu’s ploy is to endeavor to shift attention to Iran while his government brazenly steals ever more land from the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories (theft which is illegal in international law, not to mention contrary to Commandment no. 8 in the series of Ten). Top Ten Things Anthony Weiner has Said that are Worse than Sexting

Posted on 06/10/2011 by Juan

The real scandal surrounding Anthony Weiner is that he is bigoted against Palestinians and has misused his position in Congress to support punitive policies against them. Americans appear to be bored by policy, titillated by private peccadilloes. But it is the policies that are important. Mahatma Gandhi was once kicked out of a brothel in South Africa. No one judges him by his lapses. Weiner, in contrast to Gandhi, has not worked for peace but has rather given knee-jerk support to the worst policies of the most far rightwing parties in Israel toward Palestinians. A social liberal in American terms, Weiner is so blinded by his allegiance to Israel and so studied in his ignorance of the Middle East that he has played a uniformly sinister role in that aspect of foreign policy. If he were replaced by, say, an up an up-and-coming Dominican-American politician from Queens who had some sympathy with Arabs, that would be all to the good. Continue reading

Queer Atheist on David Brooks ‘Politicians Behaving Well’

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/10/opinion/10brooks.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Mr. David Brooks in his latest opinion piece ‘Politicians Behaving Well’ has missed the social fact that new forms of communication have rendered the notions of public and private conduct into a kind of limbo, that needs to be vigorously debated, in the context of the cultivation  civic republican virtue. This debate will never happen. Yes, this is categorical. The Hetero Moralizers, like Mr. Brooks, are incapable of giving sexual conduct its due regard in human affairs, without the bankrupt frame of the Abrahamic Tradition’s tribalist morality filtered through the more gentile, civilizing, even, aristocratic English Literary Tradition. That might be a way to characterize Mr. Brooks’ entire career as Fake American Political Moralist. Mr. Brooks’ political philosophy is based in male authority, a romantic attachment to a past that has quickly been eclipsed in the Capitalist West. The subversive Idea of Human Freedom  is slowly but inexorably working its way through the rest of the world, opened by the internet and other forms of social media: male power is under attack regardless of whatever form it may take, religious, ideological/political or both.

Mr. Brooks is an adept at using dubious rhetorical antithesis in service to his modest political ends , a long quotation is illustrative of this strategy:

‘Trollope admired Prudent Insiders, not Innocent Outsiders. His most admirable characters have been educated by long experience. They have grown mature by exercising responsibility. They have been ennobled by custom and civilization. In his books, powerless outsiders often behave self-indulgently and irresponsibly. Those who are in government have to grapple with the world as it really is.’

So we are presented with his ideas of ‘Prudent Insiders’ and ‘Innocent Outsiders’ as moral/political antagonists/protagonist as a kind of metaphorical description of political life in the novels of Mr. Trollope. Conformity/Nonconformity might be another iteration of this duality. But one needs no real help in deciphering Mr. Brooks’ politically conformist arguments and his self conception as a ‘Prudent Insider’, as supreme in the pantheon, as conceived in this reductive, simplistic but politically useful argument. He, at least, in this political homily, does not beat us over the head ,but instead assumes an audience sophisticated enough to decipher his paean to ‘political wisdom’, as synonymous with a self-conscious pragmatic, even, opportunistic political conformity.

Political Observer on The Good Doctor as Republican Party Campaign Strategist

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/stewardship-or-ideology/2011/06/09/AGjGvrNH_story.html?wpisrc=nl_opinions

Here is The Good Doctor (TGD) acting the part of a Republican strategist for the election of 2012, the only problem is that he cannot emancipate himself from a belief in the Great Fake Republican Economic Guru Paul Ryan, nor his own  penchant for breathtakingly reductive, even cartoonish political explanation.  Should that stand in the way of our consideration of his ‘ideas’ as presented, rhetorically framed in his usual self-aggrandizing condescension, without, this time, his spiritual habitation of Robespierre’s  shade, that has a tendency to pall after so many repetitions. The recitation of the same old political names or the newest incarnations of The Sclerotic Old White Guy Party seem unimpressive, pedestrian , although ideologically congruent with the post Bush Restoration political irrationalism, that has captured the GOP. TGD’s emphasis, here, is on domestic considerations: Medicare, the ‘albatross’ of the stimulus, Obama’s coveted dream of a European style social democratic political project, the dismal employment numbers, precipitous housing price declines, and the ‘stewardship’ or ‘ideology’ question, as vital strategic considerations, yet the permanent state of war for The American Empire does not get, even, a casual mention, as needing any strategic attention from our aspiring Republican Party strategist and opinion monger. What can we, his readers, take from this glaring omission? Is TGD fully satisfied with President Obama’s foreign policy practice, or were consideration of space necessarily foreshortening? One is confident that a pronouncement on these vital issues will be forthcoming, one has a conviction that his critique will be of the ruthlessly categorical kind, delivered with his usual polemical brio, if my reading of his character is at all accurate.
