Almost Marx on American Capitalism

Capitalism is not about job creation or civic responsibility or any of the other quaint political notions, enumerated in our founding documents. It is about profit and profit only, and it is politically naive to think that, somehow, the practitioners of American Capitalism, that unapologetically brought the derivative into our economic life, will somehow manage to reform themselves, in an act of political contrition. In the present historical moment we need a Franklin Roosevelt, a Ferdinand Pecora but instead we have a timid New Democrat, channeling the spirit of candidate Albert Gore, and a deranged Republican Party infiltrated with Jacobite Tea Partiers. The idea and practice of civic republican virtue has been too long dormant as an operative political philosophy in our national life.

About stephenkmacksd

Rootless cosmopolitan, down at heels intellectual;would be writer. 'Polemic is a discourse of conflict, whose effect depends on a delicate balance between the requirements of truth and the enticements of anger, the duty to argue and the zest to inflame. Its rhetoric allows, even enforces, a certain figurative licence. Like epitaphs in Johnson’s adage, it is not under oath.' https://www.lrb.co.uk/v15/n20/perry-anderson/diary
